The Neighborhood Story Project is a New Orleans based non-profit organization that works with High School students and helps them write and publish books about their lives. The second batch has just come out, four books by five John McDonogh students, including Signed, The President by Kenneth Phiilips. Amongst other aspects of his life, Kenneth talks a lot about his uncle, the late Irvin “Dj Irv” Phillips, one of the first dj’s to start putting songs to the Triggerman beat. There’s great photos of Irv and partner T.T. Tucker throwing early bounce parties, as well as some really insightful interviews with Irv’s sister Loren, who managed Irv back in the day (And according to her kept Irv and T.T. Tucker from getting fleeced by Luther Campbell). Loren was also the founder of Da R.U.D.E. magazine, covering the local rap scene for fifteen years. There’s a good story about Kenneth meeting his favorite rapper, Mia X, when she and Loren walked in to Kenneth’s house immediately after he’d accidentally locked his legs together with a pair of handcuffs.
